Scotto's Wine Cellar was originally opened prior to prohibition on Hicks Street in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. Like everyone else, we were closed during prohibition and in February 1934 we were once again open in our current location 318 Court Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231. In our early days we only sold wine. Our customers would come in with clay jugs that had our name imprinted; and we would fill the jugs from our barrels in the store. After WW II, as a result of licensing changes, we were allowed to sell spirits in addition to wine. The store was owned by the Scotto family with Leo Scotto at the helm. In 1989, when Leo decided to lessen his work schedule and ultimately retire, I (James Benedetto) bought the store. My primary focus is on the ever changing wine market. The store has quite a long history of serving the community. Actually, we are one of, if not the oldest, wine shops in NY state

They've been in business since 1934...that speaks volumes for the quality of this store! They have a great selection, knowledegable staff and really care about what they do.

Scotto's Wine Cellar is one of my 2 favorite wine shops in all of Carroll Gardens (Cobble Hill, etc) The oldest & most established shop in the area with a great selection. (in Business for about 25-30 years) From the friendly staff to the very competative pricing it's way up there on my list and is a MUST when shopping along Court Street. If I'm Smith Street I generally go to Vintage Cellars. Also around for a long time (10-12 years) Stay away from NEWBIES like "Smith & Vine" They are rude and often tell nasty stories about Scotto's. They forget that people, like me, who grew -up around Carroll Gardens know better. How can a new shop owner (a glorified waiter & would be muscian) have the nerve to say nasty things about well established businesses like Scotto's or Vintage Cellars.

Scotto's is a smallish, well-stocked and friendly shop along busy Court Street. All varieties of wines are stocked, and they are especially strong in Italian red. The staff is never pushy and always patient about helping undecided customers, like me. I would recommend this shop to anybody.
